US President Donald Trump is facing a difficult choice over Saudi Arabia’s request for direct military help against Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis—one that could force Washington to balance its need for Riyadh’s cooperation in the wider Iran war against the risks of getting pulled into another conflict in the Middle East.
According to a New York Times report, Trump spent nearly two weeks wavering over whether to order US strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen after Saudi Arabia repeatedly sought American military assistance. Trump ultimately decided on Sunday not to join Saudi Arabia in joint strikes, at least for now.
