A wildfire in Maui, Hawaii, has killed at least 36 people, and the death toll is expected to rise. Mayor Richard Bisson Jr. said search and rescue operations were underway and warned that the death toll could rise.

On Wednesday night, wildfires raged through the center of the Hawaiian island of Maui, engulfing much of a historic town. People had to jump into the sea to escape the fire. At least 36 people were killed, dozens were injured, and 271 buildings were destroyed. Fires in Hawaii continued to burn as of Wednesday afternoon.
